IN:WA Ignites Conversation on Creativity vs Commercial at Lively Panel Event

Final IN:WA Panel Event of 2024

Creativity vs Commercial

On November 21st, industry leaders and creatives gathered at Lawson Flats for IN:WA's final panel event of 2024, titled "Creative vs Commercial." The event, moderated by Jennifer McMahon of Modern People Global, sparked a dynamic discussion on the evolving relationship between creativity and commercial success in today's market.

A packed room of IN:WA members and guests engaged with a thought-provoking panel discussion featuring industry experts Claire Aindow, Dean Hunt, and Scott O'Hehir. The conversation explored a range of topics, from defining creativity in the age of AI to the challenges of "selling" creative concepts to clients.

Key takeaways from the evening included:

  • The blurring lines between creative and commercial: Claire Aindow's insightful comment, "Creative without commercial is art," highlighted the need for creatives to balance artistic vision with commercial viability.

  • The essential role of creativity in branding and marketing: Dean Hunt emphasized the pervasive influence of creativity in our consumer-driven world, reminding the audience that well known iconic brands owe their success to creative thinking.

  • The interdependence of creativity and commercial success: Scott O'Hehir underscored the importance of creativity in achieving strong commercial outcomes, stating, "You can't have great commercial outcomes without creativity."

Our panel events are defined by a ‘Fishbowl’ format. What that means is when any audience member wants to comment or contribute, they are invited to stand and join the panel.

This encourages engagement, sharing and interaction from the whole group. And that facilitates sharing and learning on a much larger scale than a static panel format.
We love events in the fishbowl, because this format leans heavily into our pillars of Sharing and Learning.
